Jesus and Peter

Jesus and Peter

And I say to you: “That thou are Peter; and upon this rock I will build My Church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. And I will give to you the keys of the kingdom of heaven. And whatsoever you shall bind up earth, it shall be bound also in heaven: and whatsoever thou shall loose upon earth, it shall be loosed also in heaven.”  Matthew 16: 18-19

Ancient and medieval art depicts Jesus as giving Simon – whom the Lord dubbed as “Peter” – the Keys to the Kingdom of Heaven. This Kingdom on earth is understood as the Church. Keys were an ancient sign of authority, and by conferring them made Peter Jesus’ ‘prime minister’ on earth; our first ‘pope.’

It should be noted that while some disputed this 500 or 1000 years ago, it was held by all the Faithful from the earliest days of Christian or Catholic belief!

Peter is a name that means ‘rock.’ This was the first time the name was given to a man in recorded history.
